Why did you decide to make an abridged cut of Beyond the Village Walls? Because, in a way, it bridges Void of Illusions 1 and Void of Illusions 2 together. The idea was to make it a special "bonus" episode of sorts that would be added to the Void of Illusions timeline. All right. How long did it take you, from start to finish? Two days, believe it or not. It was fun. Wow, that's a lot faster than I guessed. Now, you ended up cutting about 30,000 words from the roleplay, and you say in the beginning that you removed about 75% of the content. To go into specifics, what was your criteria for removing the other characters? I decided to keep characters who have appeared in the Void of Illusions series only. That cut the cast down to Miko, Kuro, Sparky and Fabreanne. So the rest had to leave, taking their side plots with them. I see. What about events that concerned only the Void of Illusions cast, such as the fight Fabreanne and Sparky had with Breten and Zeten on the summit? Why were those -and a few other- events removed? Because those events didn't have any lasting effects on the characters. In other words, when one of those events finished, status quo was restored, meaning that everything was back to the way it was right before the event started, as if the event hadn't taken place at all. So that means the event did nothing to advance the plot, including character development. That's why those events had to go. What I want to know is, what drew you to the original RP in the first place? Enough to make you want to rewrite it? The links to Void of Illusions, and the overall basic concept, which I thought was cool. Not to mention the fact I did help to write the final battle, even though I didn't really joined the original RP. Note that this cut isn't a rewrite in the full sense of the word. I worked with the existing material, adding new lines and paragraphs only when necessary. I was just going to ask about that actually... so there weren't really any new scenes, just added material to help with the context? That's correct. There aren't new scenes. Sometimes, since I would cut out a large chunk of text, I'd write a line or two to fill in the resulting gap. And I did cut out a lot, namely about 75% of the original source material. Still, I did modify some scenes, mostly to accomodate the fact that the party was downsized from over ten characters to just three. I also expanded a few dialogue sequences here and there too, to help with the flow of the story. So I understand this took you two days to finish. In that time, did you run into any snags that held you back for long? Not really. It was pretty straightforward. Okay, I noticed you changed a few names, such as Breten and Lilty. I understand you changed Lilty's name because it was a Final Fantasy reference, but why Breten? Simply to make it a five-letter name like the other two guys. Also, I got rid of his rather unbearable "dumb teen" speech style. That was on the house. Ah. Heh, nice. You did this to warm up for Void of Illusions 2. Have you started on Void of Illusions 2 yet? Nope. Not yet. I want to clear my long queue of unfinished pictures as much as possible before starting a project that big. Okay, and, off the top of your head, how much do you think you'll remove from Void of Illusions 2, if Village Walls is any indication? Not as much as in Beyond the Village Walls, that's for sure, but I know there will be things I'm going to either shorten or just cut out. Namely, a few characters and situations. Okay, what was the hardest part about doing the Cut? Thankfully there were no hard parts at all. Well, I really just have one more question. What other projects are you working on right now? If you mean writing projects only, then there's nothing at this moment. Sometime in the future, though, I will do the Director's Cut version of Void of Illusions 2. As I already said, Beyond the Village Walls was kind of a warm-up for that. Heh. Before you start that, any final thoughts on Beyond the Village Walls? Well, the original RP had a good core plot, but was very dilluted by too many characters and unrelated side stories. The cut takes those negative factors away and leaves the good core intact. Thus, I can say this Cut is much more focused and straight-to-the-point than the original source material, which surely makes it a much more enjoyable reading experience, especially for those who have read Void of Illusions.
