The
Community: History
|
|
We've had a very long and rather strange history. Before we became a
site, we were a forum. Before we were a forum, we were a board that
was part of a forum that was part of a site that had nothing to do
with writing. Very humble beginnings, no? Read about the history of
our community here!

The
VGMusic Era, June 2002 - May 2005
The passage of years always comes at a price. You get older, your
memories become less clear, good friends part ways... Sadly, we cannot
put an exact date on the birth of the Role-Playing and Fiction Board.
What we do know is this. On March 16, 1998, Mike Newman, the founder
of the Video Game Music Archive,
announced the creation of the new message boards. This event, which occurred
shortly after the site had changed web hosts, is the earliest evidence
we have of VGMusic (as the site is commonly called) having a forum. It
can be assumed that there was an Role-Playing and Fiction Board,
though this cannot be verified.
The next four years are a similar story. Though VGMusic changed
servers again and again, and the forum is mentioned from time to time,
there is no reference to an RP Board in their News
Archive. Our earliest verification of the RP Board's existence
comes from Elec, who joined on June 15, 2002.
For the next three years, people came and went, but the Role-Playing
and Fiction Board slowly formed a steadfast community of its own.
In October 2004, Ricky and NaokoYiran (who now goes by the username
Nerikuro Shino) teamed up to create the VGMusic RP Archives page,
located on Geocities. Ricky
would copy the RPs, and send them to NaokoYiran, who would upload them
to the page. Prior to this, copies of RPs were few and far between-
only a few people (Horn, Mavrickindigo, and GeminiSaint, primarily)
would copy the RPs they were involved in. As a result, there are very
few existing copies of RPs that occurred before October 2004. Though
the Archive page fell into oblivion due to a severe lack of updates
about a year later, Ricky continued saving the RPs to his hard drive.
In March 2005, MatthiasKinnearLawrence (who now goes by the shortened
name Matthias) started the first installment of the RP
Awards.
In May 2005, ForteBlast, one of VGMusic's administrators and the
moderator of the Role-Playing and Fiction Board, decided that the
community the board had turned into should be on its own forum,
instead of being a parasite of sorts to the VGMusic forum, and so he
created a new forum for us on May 10, 2005. The RP Board was locked on
May 25, and all posts were deleted on June 01. A link remained until
mid-July, when the entire forum was deleted during a server move.

The
VGRP Era, May 2005 - April 2006
The new forum was named the Video
Game Role-Playing Central forum, and it was located on the
MyFreeBB server. Though it was a definite downgrade- there were no
attachments, the server wasn't very stable, and we were all but
invisible to the rest of the Internet- we made the most of it, and
continued on writing RPs. Fictions got more attention with the
creation of a separate Fiction board, and backstage discussions became
more common thanks to the Discussion board. GeminiSaint was voted as
administrator, while Ricky and Thalzon were elected for moderators.
In August, Ricky started the Hall
of Fame; VGRP Quest and Geowalkers became the first
RPs to be inducted. Matthias held the second RP
Awards.
Towards the end of August, as we drew further apart from VGMusic, we
created our own General Message and Art Boards, as well as an all-new
Video Game Reviews Board. Elec and Matthias were brought on staff as
moderators of the new boards.
In March 2006, MyFreeBB began to suffer serious performance issues,
and, after a ten days of downtime, we decided it was time to move.

The
RP Haven Era, April 2006 - present
CtrlAltDestroy purchased web space from Bluehost,
and, under the new name of RP Haven, we put launched the new forum on
March 31, 2006. The staff was updated somewhat- CtrlAltDestroy became
webmaster, Ricky and Thalzon became administrators, and Elec and
Matthias became moderators of all the boards. CtrlAltDestroy began
studying books on how to put a working site together, while Ricky
started putting the new Hall of
Fame together. In September, Ricky finished getting the Hall of
Fame up to date, and took over working on the site; the main site went
live on October 01, 2006.
